"In an era of economic crisis, the EU must ensure that free trade is defended and extended. That is why the FTA with Peru and Colombia, both advanced democracies which share our values, is a critical and welcome step. Protectionism is, sadly, alive and well in emerging economies, including Brazil, Russia, India and China, who are stepping up unfair trade measures, increasing the risks of another global recession and damaging European industry. In South America, Argentina was the chief culprit. So it is to be welcomed that Europe has succeeded in securing a deal in more open South American countries. The car, chemical, textile and telecoms sectors are ready to benefit, and European business will save EUR 250 million that it currently pays in costs. The UK spirits industry is particularly keen to compete in these markets. For the Peruvians and Colombians, practically all their exports to Europe will be tariff free, their economies will grow, and the principles of freedom will be deepened a little more. Let us continue to the next big prize: the EU-US free trade deal."@en1
