"In October we saw the launch of MEND – ‘Mind, Exercise, Nutrition... Do it!’ – in Cardiff, with Welsh rugby stars juggling bananas. Fruit is an important point of a healthy diet, so the banana trade is important to us too. Trade agreements exist between Central America and the EU. The agreement provides for the reduction and finally for the elimination of customs tariffs in bilateral trade between the partners. The agreement also contains a safeguard clause fine-tuned to the banana sector, so that no other industrial or manufacturing sector in Central America would be able to flood European markets. I abstained on this report, as it does not mention how environmental standards will be upheld. Similarly, labour standards will be monitored but are not part of the criteria for investigation and sanction."@en1
