"With the adoption of this report, the European Parliament has deprived itself of power and the EU is effectively waiving its competence in favour of the European Patent Office: a non-EU institution.
This is clearly a negative development for EU citizens. There are also concerns regarding the substance of the patent law. As it stands, within the EU there are several limitations to the effects of patents in the area of biotechnology. However, there is little guarantee that the EPO will respect national or EU legislation. This could prove detrimental to farmers.
I voted against the package on patents as I want to protect the interests of Welsh citizens. It should be the democratically-elected legislators that have control over the issue, not patent lawyers."@en1
