"I voted for this report, which I believe will be of benefit to Irish and European innovators by protecting their inventions and enforcing patents across the EU. In supporting this initiative, I hope and expect that reductions in the cost of patenting inventions will strongly benefit European enterprises, in particular SMEs and research centres. The European Commission estimates that this ‘unitary patent’ will cut by more than EUR 30 000 the average cost of having patent protection across the EU. A unified patent court with specialised judges will also be established under this proposal. Following Parliament’s vote of approval, I am pleased to report that the incoming Irish Presidency of the EU will make the necessary preparations to enable the 26 participating Member States to sign the agreement on the Unified Patent Court in early 2013."@en1
