"I supported this report, which establishes an EU-wide patenting system and will allow inventors to submit a single patent which will apply across 25 EU Member States. The legislation should not only simplify the European patenting procedure, but also greatly reduce the cost of filing a patent in the EU. Currently patent protection across all 27 Member States is estimated to cost EUR 32,000 per patent (compared with USD 1,850 in the US); this is expected to fall to less than EUR 1000 once the measures come into force. Under the current system, translation into all EU languages represents one of the major costs when filing a patent, but this legislation should reduce the need for translation and also allows some SMEs, universities, individuals and non-profit organisations to claim the cost of translation back from the European Patent Office. The legislation does not change the law on what can and cannot be patented, but it should make the EU patenting system more accessible and put all EU inventors on a level playing field. These proposals should help facilitate innovation in the European economy, which is vital to get the economy growing again."@en1
