"I voted in favour of the amendment to the report on the European Maritime Safety Agency. I firmly believed that this Parliament ought to have rejected the Council position. I, like many of my constituents, shudder at the thought of enlarging the sphere of influence of any agency of the European Union, given their track record of failure and disadvantage to the interests of my constituents. EMSA is no different. It is clear that EMSA is going down a similar route to so many other agencies – starting off with good intentions and based on co-operation, in order to provide Member States of the Commission with technical and scientific assistance in the field of maritime safety and the prevention of pollution by ships. Yet now comes the move for more power, more influence. That is a concept I object to in principle, and therefore I supported the amendment tabled by the Member for the North West of England."@en1
