"Mr President, throughout the last few months I have spoken a number of times about the importance of an Association Agreement between the EU and Central America and I firmly believe that it offers a good deal for both parties. Trade, of course, is the main element of this agreement and will address obstacles to trade in goods. It also offers much more than this. For example, political dialogue and cooperation in areas of shared interest, for example in the fields of security, counter-terrorism and human rights. The trade element of the agreement can also drive reform in Central America and create an environment where stability and prosperity lead to improved human rights standards. But whilst recognising these benefits, however, I am also aware of the potential threat to the single market from unfair competition, which is why I have voted in favour of this bilateral safeguard clause. It is very important to highlight that this protection measure should only be temporary in nature and be used only to avoid the threat of injury, or injury itself, to EU industries from the surge in imports from Central America, specifically in the trade of bananas."@en1
