"Mr President, I think Commissioner Barnier put it very well today when he was responding to the result of the vote here in Parliament. He said that for decades we have been trying to get agreement in relation to a unitary patent; today we have done that. As he pointed out, we now have three-way agreement: the Commission, the Council and Parliament.
This is a real success story: success number one from the point of view of competitiveness, success number two from the point of view of growth, and success number three from the point of view of jobs. As the previous speaker said, the cost of obtaining a patent up to now has been so prohibitive that it is a real burden, particularly on the small and medium-sized enterprise sector. If you look at the cost, it can cost up to EUR 20 000, with EUR 14 000 of that sum being spent on translations alone. By comparison with the United States: EUR 1 850. So today we have done a good day’s work and I do not have any doubt whatsoever that, as a result of the decision overwhelmingly endorsed, we will see jobs flowing from today’s decision."@en1
