"Mr President, the 23 million small and medium-sized enterprises across the EU, including over 230 000 in my own country, Ireland, are indeed the backbone of the European economy. They account for 98% of all firms and over a hundred million jobs. In Ireland they account for over two-thirds of all private-sector jobs.
SMEs have proved their worth in the past: 85% of new jobs created in the EU between 2002 and 2010 were in fact in SMEs, yet only 13% of SMEs are active outside the EU. The integration of these firms into the global economy is a key part of the EU 2020 strategy. This resolution has some very positive proposals to help resolve the difficulties SMEs face when trying to find out more about third-country markets and accessing capital to break into these markets such as investment funds for SMEs, European business mentoring schemes, EU export/import facilities, etc.
I urge the Commission and the Member States to take up these proposals and implement them without delay."@en1
