"How do you follow that? The way you do it is actually to talk about the past agendas of the EU. Do you remember the Lisbon Agenda, which was going to create the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy by 2010? How did that go? Well, not very well. What about the Europe 2020 Strategy, which is supposed to reap the benefits of the digital single market by 2020? How is that going? Well, so far, probably not quite as well as the Lisbon Agenda went. So how do we allot the benefits of the digital single market? What we need to do, rather than having reports in committees and structures and discussions and debate about it, is to get out of the way and let the digital entrepreneurs roll out their ideas. Get out of the way and stop putting up barriers to the creativity of digital wealth.
Let me give you an example. A few years ago we had a roaming regulation. It may have seemed a nice idea, so that MEPs could have cheaper phone calls as they crossed international borders, but it has suppressed the profits of some of the mobile phone companies giving them less to invest in some of their digital structures. One of the reasons we complain about lack of digital structure and lack of courage is because we suppressed those profits. Let us get out of the way and help the companies invest in digital infrastructure for a single market."@en1
