"Madam President, yesterday, after 60 years of endeavour, we got the Nobel Peace Prize, which was a wonderful achievement for us. Today, after more than 30 years, we have what you can describe as ‘a unitary patent’. Some people are not happy with it – understandably maybe – but Commissioner Barnier put his finger on it when he described it as a ‘dynamic’ compromise. Of course the proof of the pudding will be in the eating. If it improves competitiveness, then obviously it is a good thing. If it means more patents are registered, that would prove obviously that it is successful. My colleague, Mrs Gallo, pointed out that we have only 60 000 patents per year in the European Union. If that increases, then clearly we are making progress. Of course we would like to see Spain and Italy coming in. I would ask Commissioner Barnier whether he sees this happening and if so, when, and what efforts are being made to make it happen?"@en1
