"Mr President, as we look forward to our Christmas turkey I want to refer to a serious problem in turkey production. In Ireland turkey production has fallen from 3.8 million birds a year in 2005 to under one million in 2011 as many producers are struggling to survive, and this year has been particularly challenging with a bad harvest and increasing food costs.
Local and traditional producers are being squeezed out of the market and rural businesses are suffering. The issue here is two-fold. Farmers need a fair return for fair work and for products produced to the highest standards, and consumers have a right to clarity and information about where their food is coming from.
It is clear that if consumers want to support their rural producers and buy local they must inform themselves, ask questions of their butchers. However, we have a responsibility to ensure that labelling is clear and informative. While it is not mandatory at present to label country of origin, there is legislation coming down the track in 2014 which will make it mandatory to label imported products, including poultry, with its country of origin.
It is essential that this report addresses the joint concerns of local producers and consumers if we intend to have a fair and equitable internal market in the EU."@en1
