"For the 2014 European Parliament elections, the European political families must submit their candidates for the Presidency of the Commission. These candidates must play an important role in the European Parliament electoral campaign. The political legitimacy of the European Parliament and the Commission must be further solidified by linking their election to the public’s choice.
It is a well-known fact that women are underrepresented in politics, even though they play a crucial role in solving crises and conflicts. Internationally, women have shown that they need to participate in global policy. The European Commission must propose legislation on gender equality in politics, and the European institutions must improve gender equality at all levels. The percentage of women participating in political decision-making has not increased in the last few years, and has, in fact, declined further in some decision-making structures.
Even though I voted for equal participation of men and women in the EP elections, which would have guaranteed a balanced representation here, I regret that the quorum of the European Parliament, and the European right in particular, did not vote for the implementation of this gender equality measure."@en1
