Small-scale fishing not only promotes socio-economic cohesion and ensures a livelihood for large numbers of families, but also constitutes a factor keeping fishing communities alive in all coastal areas. I believe that it is important to pursue an approach to the fisheries sector that takes into account the biological, ecological and social levels, with a view to creating a sustainable balance between the state of existing resources in the different maritime areas and the protection of the socio-economic fabric of coastal communities which are dependent on inshore fishing to ensure jobs and prosperity."@en1
