"I am in favour of this resolution. It is simply incredible to see the risks to which too many people are willing to subject future generations. If urgent measures are not taken, the average temperature of the planet will increase by 3 to 5°C over the course of the century. The 2°C target set by the international community is, according to scientists, the level above which the climate could spiral out of control, with effects that would bring about a further rapid acceleration in temperatures. However, even if the most ambitious promises made by the different states are kept, there will be eight gigatonnes too many, two gigatonnes more than the estimates given in the previous United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report in 2011. The new assessment can be partly explained by the fact that the countries have clarified their promises and the way in which they should be interpreted in practice. How many verbal and tangible warnings do we need to hear before we act? The 2°C target could still be attained, if swift measures were taken."@en1
