"If we think back a few years to the Copenhagen conference and the importance which was attached to it, it is quite striking how little media attention the subsequent negotiations in Cancun and Durban have received in comparison. This has obscured the fact that these more recent negotiations have in fact produced constructive – if modest – progress. The developments we have seen on issues such as forestry monitoring and reporting and the Clean Development Mechanism are both encouraging and significant. They might not always be headline news, but they show that international cooperation is working and that meaningful progress can be made. We should continue to build on this progress, especially in the area of forestry and financing. Deforestation is one of the single biggest contributory factors to CO increases. Effective international forestry management will not only reduce these emissions, but will also help preserve biodiversity and the invaluable eco-services it provides. We do not have to wait for a finalised international agreement on emissions before we put in place concrete measures which will deliver not only CO reduction but also wider environmental, economic and societal benefits in the medium and long term."@en1
