"I welcome this resolution because the practice whereby shark fins are removed and the remainder of the body thrown back into the sea is unacceptable and should be prohibited. Consequently it is very important for ‘fins naturally attached’ policies, which would stop this practice of removing fins, to be properly implemented at EU level. Furthermore, a strict control mechanism should be established in order to close legal loopholes and address difficulties associated with the use of a fin to carcass ratio. Above all, we need to narrow the derogation currently applied and ensure compliance with the obligation to land fins and carcasses together in the same port. On the other hand, we have to ensure that the ban on removing fins does not have a significant impact on the profitability of businesses and crew members’ safety."@en1
