"The European Citizens’ Initiative, which entered into force on 1 April 2012, allows registered petitions, namely those which have secured more than one million signatures from a minimum of seven Member States, to be the subject of public hearings and to be forwarded to the European Commission for investigation. Despite an increase in the number of new petitions, there was a fall in the number of petitions registered, as many of them concerned issues falling outside the Union’s area of competence. This fact shows that citizens’ understanding of the European institutions still needs to be further developed. I voted for the report as I consider that this instrument of European citizenship is an important step towards bringing citizens closer to the Union."@en1
