"Full exercise of the right of petition is essential to achieving the European project, hence the importance of the work of the Committee on Petitions. The main focus of the work of the Committee on Petitions during 2011 was on the environment and fundamental rights/justice. This was the case in discussions on petitions in committee, new petitions received, reports and hearings, and fact-finding visits. The number of new petitions increased, whereas the number of petitions registered steadily declined. This can be explained by the new filtering process introduced as of June 2011, by which so-called non-petitions were answered by other services. I voted in favour of this report as I consider that it effectively and objectively sets out the activities of the Committee on Petitions in 2011."@en1
