"There are several important arguments in favour of supporting this report on industrial, energy and other aspects of shale gas and oil. Shale gas may prove to be extremely important in the light of the EU’s growing reliance on gas imports, which is why its considerable potential should be emphasised. The Member States are responsible for determining their own energy mix, which means that the principle of subsidiarity must be rigorously applied. EU environmental law imposes certain minimum standards that may need to be adapted for the purposes of commercial-scale exploitation. All these measures will help increase energy self-sufficiency and security. They may also lower energy prices for consumers, as has happened in the United States."@en1
