"Gas will have a crucial role to play in reducing emissions. In this context, shale gas and other unconventional gas sources are becoming potential important new sources of supply in Europe, which could lead to radical changes in global energy markets. It is noted that shale gas has risen from 1.4 % of the US gas market in 2000 to some 17 % in 2011. According to some estimates, total shale gas reserves in place in the EU exceed 56 thousand billion cubic metres (BCM), of which some 14 thousand BCM might be technically recoverable. Its exploitation must therefore be studied, with all the necessary conditions being created to ensure environmentally neutral exploration, extraction and use in accordance with all the safety rules on gas extraction activities."@en1
