"On Wednesday, 21 November, at a plenary sitting of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, I voted on two reports on shale gas. I decided to vote in favour of these reports after taking into account the environmental issues and the crucial need to develop our countries and our industries to respond to the needs of the citizens. In light of our current scientific knowledge, there is absolutely no doubt that large-scale commercial extraction by hydraulic fracturing would be contrary to environmental protection. However, that must not call into question the scientific research into this resource, which could allow France and Europe to obtain a degree of energy independence. Sensible, public and safe extraction of shale gas and oil in the years to come (on condition that safer extraction methods are perfected) would not only be an asset for our industry, it would also help to reduce the cost of energy for many families. I understand the fears and doubts that have arisen since we first discovered and began using unconventional methods to extract this energy source, and those fears are justified.
