"After a heated debate on shale gas extraction, and a great deal of back and forth in the Chamber, during which, as rapporteur for the opinion of the Committee on Development, I expressed my strong opposition and outlined the concerns of developing countries, particularly in terms of land grabbing and access to water, fertile soil and food, which potentially call into question their food sovereignty. Today we voted on the two reports of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE Committee) and the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, at last adopting an EP position on this highly controversial subject. Although the ITRE report was in favour of shale gas, totally irresponsible and unacceptable, Mr Sonik’s report was more open to discussion. In the end, I abstained in the final vote on this report. The reasons are simple: on the one hand, this report rightly favours the adaptation of the European regulations, and demonstrates the EP’s desire to provide a framework for fracturing and to respond to the challenges; on the other hand, the moratorium, or more precisely the proposed amendment urging the Member States not to authorise any further hydraulic fracturing in the EU, was rejected. In any event, I am completely opposed to shale gas extraction."@en1
