"Mr President, the May earthquakes in Italy resulted in 27 people being killed, 350 being injured and another 45 000 being evacuated, making these some of the most tragic events in the European Union’s recent history. I believe that the European Union was right to release the funds to Italy to demonstrate its solidarity. I am, however, appalled at the procedural aspects of this Fund, especially the length of the mobilisation period. I call for more efficient and prompt administrative procedures. The requirement for three European institutions to be involved in these procedures certainly delays the approval and release procedures, and slows down the response in the Member States affected by natural disasters."@en1
