"− Based on the scale of the earthquakes in Italy in May 2012 there can be no doubt as far as the European Union is concerned that providing immediate financial support from the Solidarity Fund is justified. This natural disaster resulted in serious human losses and material damage on a massive scale. In view of this, I cast my vote in favour of the report. However, I also think it is important to highlight that it is not only natural disasters that can have severe consequences on EU territory; industrial disasters, whether unleashed by human error or adverse natural events, can also have this effect. In such cases, however, the Solidarity Fund cannot provide support to the country affected. In my view we need to change this situation and establish a Union instrument that can provide immediate and effective financial support to Member States in the event of industrial disasters."@en1
