"Mr President, the main cause of the heightened inequalities and the current economic crisis in the European Union is the greediness of some Member States, forgoing the solidarity principle of the Union. Now more than ever, we need to invest in the top economic sectors and I believe that reducing budgets for policies that have proved effective to date, such as the cohesion policy and the common agricultural policy (CAP), will greatly affect economic growth and the global competitiveness of the EU. Mr Van Rompuy’s proposal to reduce the cohesion policy budget by EUR 30 billion and the CAP by EUR 25 billion is unacceptable and the Member States must vote against it."@en1
