"Commissioner Tajani, yesterday afternoon the whole of Piombino, a town in my region, Tuscany, ground to a halt for several hours. In total, 10 000 people took to the streets: workers, pensioners, retailers, artisans, business owners, the unemployed and ordinary citizens, issuing a cry for help that today I would like to bring before the European Parliament in Strasbourg. The town risks dying because of the crisis facing the steel industry, which has supported Piombino for decades.
Lucchini is the hardest hit company, and this could result in thousands of job losses, with repercussions on the entire economy and on the local community. We would therefore like the European Union to send out a strong signal to save the European steel industry, which today faces enormous difficulties and fierce competition, particularly from Asia. In 1951, European integration as we know it today began from steel: it is only fair and right therefore that European institutions should act to protect and save this sector, which should still be regarded as a strategic priority."@en1
