"Mr President, for a long time now experts have been warning of an imminent paradigm shift, which Europe’s car manufacturers do not want to face up to. Now the automotive industry, one of the biggest industrial sectors in Europe with an annual turnover of more than EUR 700 billion, is deep in crisis, as we know.
While large-volume manufacturers in particular have been struggling due to declining sales, premium manufacturers have been reporting falling profit margins. It is clear that maintaining production figures would only force the automotive industry into a vicious circle of ruinous discount battles.
Although the Commission’s plan to facilitate exports of European cars sounds good on paper, it is doubtful whether European car manufacturers in the lower price segment will be able to compete with cheap Chinese cars. At best, therefore, this plan will help premium manufacturers.
One thing is clear: a restructuring such as the one we witnessed recently in the United States, which destroyed tens of thousands of jobs and cancelled pension entitlements, cannot be the stated aim of the European Union."@en1
