"Mr President, for the sake of the most elementary form of good sense and as a bare minimum, it is recommended that there be an immediate moratorium imposed on the exploitation of shale gas and oil deposits. The environmental impacts associated with the exploitation of these deposits are significant and extremely negative. Associated techniques, hydraulic fracturing, the injection of possibly toxic chemical pollutants into rock formations necessarily leads to enormous instability in these formations and the degradation of the groundwater resources or watercourses draining from these formations. These examples of impact would be enough to ban the exploitation of these resources, but as a bare minimum a moratorium should be imposed. Moreover, there is no evidence that there would be a positive return on the amount of energy consumed from such an intensive extraction method. It would be interesting to find out the results of and methodology used for this evaluation of the energy return on energy invested, if they do in fact exist, and if not, it would be interesting for such an assessment to be carried out. An energy return on energy invested evaluation covering the life cycle of each of these developments in order to assess the economic balance of this technique."@en1
