Two-wheelers account for the most deaths on European roads, being involved in more than 60 % of the total, yet they represent only 2 % of total kilometres driven. In addition, they are considered the most polluting vehicles. The report drawn up by Wim van de Camp focuses on the proposal for a regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on the approval and market surveillance of two- or three-wheel vehicles and quadricycles. I welcome the new proposal for a regulation which simplifies the current legal framework, introducing significant improvements which will make new two- or three-wheel vehicles and quadricycles less polluting, give them more effective safety systems (especially as regards braking and lighting), at the same time as giving businesses a period to adapt to the new rules. I welcome the adoption of this text, on which I voted in favour. Its objective is to reduce the number of fatalities on the roads and I welcome the introduction of technical innovations to improve safety, such as anti-lock braking systems (ABS)."@en1
