The European Union has made significant strides in terms of copyright protection. An example is the Resale Right Directive, which gave authors the right to participate in the resale of their work. By this means, fair treatment for authors has been ensured, as provided by the Berne Convention.
The application of this Directive in all Member States with effect from 1 January 2012 will bring even greater benefits. I believe that in order to have a single copyright market, implementation of the provisions on the right of resale is essential. The potential of the market for plastic and graphic works of art in the Union is very great for both authors and consumers. For that reason, the protection and respect of copyright holders must remain crucial objectives of the Union in order to stimulate innovation and creation."@en1
