"Madam President, this report considers the only genuine economic and monetary union to be a federal one. I voted against this report because I believe it will deprive national parliaments of their rightful say in the budget of their own country. Already we have seen Brussels trying to control national purse strings as the EU tries to claw its way out of the economic misery, but – tighter control by an EU treasury over Member States’ budgets? Seriously? Not a good idea. We have seen how the Stability Pact has failed to prevent the implosion of the euro. We must also resist proposals for the EU budget to be funded from its own resources, including a financial transaction tax. Again, not a good idea. If the euro area chooses to go ahead with some form of banking union, I hope it will ignore the recommendations of this report."@en1
