"This House has been indulging in quite a lot of rhetoric, in terms of the budget, about retaining and protecting the budgets for those instruments that have a clear impact on growth and jobs. One of these is the Connecting Europe Facility. It is one of many. It is important for infrastructure in transport, energy and telecommunications. Not only will it have an impact on businesses, it also helps complete the single market and it helps lever in private sector money. What I want to know is what the Commission can do to make sure that these budgets – and I include research budgets, as well, in this – are in fact protected, in view of the Council negotiations this week. And I do not simply want to hear an answer saying that we want a larger budget. It is quite clear that we may well be working with either a freeze or something close to a freeze. What are you going to do to help protect these budgets, whatever the size of the whole budget? I do not simply want to hear that we want more money."@en1
