"As you know, Mr Chountis, I have visited your country twice – once three weeks ago and the other time before the election, when Mr Papadimos was Prime Minister – and I tried to tell the Greek people that our policies for tackling the crisis are not just about sacrifice, because sacrifice without a growth policy and without initiatives to support businesses is likely to be useless and, in my opinion, harmful too, because it does not deliver the desired effect.
Of course we need to put our finances in order, but at the same time we should be explaining to citizens what their sacrifices are trying to achieve. That is why the European Commission and the Greek Government held a big event in Greece on the development of small and medium-sized enterprises; that is why it will be in Greece again in January organising business-to-business meetings between European businesses and Greek businesses, so as to increase European investment in Greece and to support small and medium-sized enterprises.
We are working closely with the Greek Government on the tourism sector, which falls within my area of competence and I think is tremendously important, and which should increasingly become an industry in its own right. We will be doing everything we need to do in this area. With Commissioner Damanaki, we launched an initiative just a few weeks ago in Athens. So everything that can and should be done on this will be done. In answer to your question, I do not think Europe should just be asking people to make sacrifices; I think it should also come up with a policy for growth. That is what we are trying to do, not least on the basis of the Council decision.
There is not just the fiscal compact, but also a growth policy, which must be sustained and developed, focusing on the different entrepreneurial situations that create employment in the different Member States. As far as I am concerned, my commitment to the Greek economic fabric will be very strong; I consider it a priority. Because Greece cannot and should not be abandoned, but should remain in the EU and in the euro area."@en1
