"Mr President, I am addressing my question to Commissioner Tajani. Twenty years ago, in his speech at Davos, Akio Morita, the co-founder of Sony, said that only the processing industry provides solid employment on a proper scale, while the service sector can survive only as long as there is an industry that may be supported by these services. It is becoming increasingly evident that Europe’s main problem is a leakage of industry away to other countries and regions of the world. We should not deceive ourselves: until such time as we rebuild an industrial sector on our continent, we shall not manage to rid ourselves of the main causes of stagnation in the European economy. It was more than two years ago that Mario Monti said that the EU was in need of a new industrial policy that stimulated the economy. Once again, though, it has all gone no further than words and documents. Does the European Commission not think that perhaps it might be time to start work on a common European industrial policy? If the United States, China and Japan are making use of instruments of various types to support national investments, it is worth analysing such solutions for Europe too. Which of the solutions that are currently feasible should we be applying today to develop industry in Europe?"@en1
