"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, on 5 May 2010, the European Parliament adopted, with a very large majority of 488 votes in favour, the multi-party motion for a regulation, tabled by Mr Áder and Mr Tőkés, which urged for a ban on cyanide-based mining technologies by the end of 2011. Unfortunately, to date, the European Commission has not done anything since Parliament’s decision to create legislation that would deal with this matter and ban this exceptionally dangerous method of mining in Europe. Events in the recent past and anticipated steps in the future suggest that further problems will emerge within the European Union on this topic, since the environmental protection authority in Romania has already issued an operating licence for a cyanide mine, albeit a slightly smaller one, at Certeju de Sus, while at Kremnica in Slovakia preparations are also under way to re-open a mine. If we do not want these procedures to lead to initiatives to re-open the mine at Roşia Montană too, then the European Commission must do something."@en1
