"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, I have spoken before in this Chamber to draw attention to the dangerous drift that the city of Brussels is undergoing, and some incidents in the last few weeks are even more alarming.
In October just gone, two municipalities in the Belgian capital elected members of Islamist parties who explicitly follow Islamic law, which they would like to see applied in Europe as well. The signal given by the city is certainly not one of its best, if the people who say that the traditional Christmas tree will not be put up in the
this year in order not to offend different religious sensibilities are right. I wonder where this step will lead. In a municipality in my own region of Tuscany, a mayor would even like to prohibit the display of the Crucifix in some public places.
It is certainly not a matter of betraying, or trampling on, our history, culture and traditions if we do a favour to those who are guests among us, and who should be treated as such: with respect, but in the full knowledge that we are the masters of the house here, and so we have the right and the duty to uphold our own characteristics and rights, including the right of religion, of course. A people … Europe is like a tree: without roots it is doomed to die, like the Christmas tree that Brussels wants to get rid of."@en1
