"Mr President, first of all, I would like to congratulate Lithuania for passing the democracy test, because a social democrat prime minister has been nominated by the President, who belongs to the group of peoples’ parties. We have elections in Romania too, on 9 December, and the current president, Traian Băsescu, who belongs to the peoples’ parties group, exactly as in Lithuania, has just announced that he will not take the election result into account, and will not nominate a prime minister given to him by a majority in Parliament. In other words, he will nominate a prime minister just as he pleases, a prime minister who will represent the national interest, as defined by Traian Băsescu.
I expect both the European Parliament and the European Commission to defend democracy in the EU, in each of the 27 Member States. I expect the Commission and Parliament to take a very decided and vehement attitude, if Traian Băsescu completely ignores the majority will of Parliament. I also draw Parliament’s attention to the fact that we are at risk of a disinformation campaign, as happened this summer."@en1
