"Mr President, an industrial policy is essential for Member States and for the European Union so that we can meet the needs of our peoples. For far too long, the official line has been that the market decides who lives and dies in economic terms. The result: massive destruction of businesses, the loss of millions of jobs, impoverishment of know-how, human lives sacrificed on the altar of financial returns. A reality that makes our peoples poorer and the rich richer. Yet one thing seems obvious. What employees and businesses in trouble need is not grand speeches but specific measures that put an end to the iniquitous law of the market. Without a rapid change in direction, without strong determination to provide European industry with the means of continuing to develop, to merely exist, we will rush headlong into disaster."@en1
