"Mr President, to my mind, the most important initiative of the EU’s neighbourhood policy is to maintain European aspirations, namely the accession hopes of the states of the Western Balkans – that cannot be said often enough. The recent reactions in the Croatian, but also the Serbian media to the acquittal of the Croatian general are proof that emotions, antagonistic emotions amongst the people of the Western Balkans, remain very strong and dangerous. The hope of accession, this European aspiration, is therefore especially meaningful for this region.
We must try to find answers to unresolved issues, over Kosovo for example, in such a way that they are acceptable to the peoples concerned, the states concerned. It will be especially important here not to overlook the historical sensibilities of the Serbs, the Serbian identity, if you will."@en1
