"Mr President, the European Parliament must comment on the events that have taken place between France and Spain but which relate to European democracy as a whole. Aurore Martin is a Basque political activist with French nationality, resident in France, against whom Spain issued a European arrest warrant for offences linked to her membership of the Batasuna movement, which is banned in Spain because of alleged links to ETA. As such, Aurore Martin’s activities have been deemed to be linked to a terrorist organisation and are subject to heavy penalties in Spain. By contrast, Batasuna is a party that is authorised in France, and the political activities in question conducted by Ms Aurore Martin are completely legal there. She was recently arrested by the French police and immediately handed over to the Spanish police. How can we allow the European Union, whose aim is to improve the freedoms of European citizens, to sanction distortion of the European arrest warrant procedure and reduce political freedoms in Europe to the lowest common denominator? How can we allow Spain and France, by acting in this manner, to endanger the peace process currently under way in the Basque Country?"@en1
