"Mr President, in the Member States of the European Union, recent years have been dominated by the crushing effects of economic and financial crisis, which have had particularly destructive social impacts.
Citizens constantly hear from politicians about savings measures, including in national budgets, whether in the context of state budgets or our common European budget. Earmarking financial resources to rescue the banking sector or financial institutions or to contribute to the European Financial Stability Facility helps indebted countries. However, citizens hear little or almost nothing about how their desperate social situation is to be tackled. Even today, in the Member States of the European Union, especially in most of those that joined the European Union in 2004, more and more people continue to fall below the poverty threshold. Wages in our countries are not comparable with wages in the developed economies, and therefore I think that we too – at European Parliament level, in the European Commission and the Council – should start to talk more about the fact that our fellow citizens are living in such a difficult social situation and should also seek solutions in this sensitive area."@en1
