"Mr President, Slovakia is preparing to issue a memorial coin representing Saints Constantine and Methodius, Christian missionaries who brought faith – and the first writing – to our ancestors 1 150 years ago. However, after intervention by the European institutions, the National Bank of Slovakia has decided to remove crosses and haloes from the artistic design. The attempt to remove everything Christian from public life has also been demonstrated in the attacks by Members of this Parliament on Commissioner-designate Tonio Borg for his personal values and attitudes as a practising Christian. Questioning Europe’s Christian heritage harms European integration, and forcing Christians out of public life tramples on the freedom of thought, conscience and religion guaranteed by the European Charter of Human Rights."@en1
