"I supported the motion for a resolution because once again the parliamentary elections in Belarus violated the basic standards laid down by the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe. Not a single opposition candidate was elected to the national parliament. The Belarusian authorities remain deaf to repeated appeals by the international community, and they are determined to move even further away from democracy and entrench the isolation of Belarus. We are prepared to engage in a European Neighbourhood Policy but only when the Government of Belarus demonstrates respect for democratic values."@en1
