".
I support this report, which notes that Russia concluded its negotiations on accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) after 18 years of negotiations on 10 November 2011 and was officially accepted as a member on 16 December 2011. The European Union is a strategic trade partner of Russia, ranking as its first source of imports, its main export destination and a key investment partner. Furthermore, since Russia has become the EU’s second source of imports (EUR 158.6 billion) and its fourth export destination (EUR 86.1 billion), its accession to the WTO should be welcomed in this resolution, which underlines how it can facilitate trade flows between the EU and Russia and, at the same time, stimulate economic growth and job creation on both sides. I would also highlight the possibility of concluding a new partnership and cooperation agreement as another opportunity to contribute to an enhanced partnership between the two parties. The text must, however, advise against restrictive measures."@en1
