".
The European Semester will help to improve the management of economic governance of the Member States that are linked by the responsibility to implement the Europe 2020 strategy. I believe that, in 2012 and the years ahead, regional policy will play an important role in developing national programmes during the European Semester, and it will be one of the key instruments in meeting the long and medium-term objectives. A strong cohesion policy with adequate funding could prevent future financial and economic crises in Europe, and protect the less developed regions. It is also important to involve local and regional partners in achieving the European Union’s objectives, given the different levels of development and special characteristics of the 271 regions. This would result in a higher level of overall responsibility and ensure greater visibility for the objectives and the results on the ground."@en1
