". The European Semester and the Stability and Growth Pact are a powerful system of economic and fiscal coordination for the Member States. I congratulate Mr Gauzès for his work. The resolution sums up the various proposals for coordinating economic policies agreed at EU level and points out that many Member States, national parliaments, social partners and civil society have not been involved in the European Semester. I agree: the system should become more political and democratic, and involve more partners. Acknowledging that cost reduction and expenditure control are still important objectives; today’s vote shows that we are asking for greater control by the European Parliament and the national parliaments. Greater consideration should be given to the objective of economic growth. I hope that the Commission will implement measures to permit greater involvement of the various parliaments in drawing up proposals, and that a new mechanism will be created for joint management of public finances and the macroeconomic situation of Member States."@en1
