"Mr President, I voted against this motion for a resolution, not because I do not recognise the Georgian elections and the progress Georgia has made, but because this motion for a resolution and the elections have been used as a pretext for the real aim, evident in paragraphs 18 and 19, of supporting and advancing the cause of Georgia’s admission to NATO. This Parliament is not, however, a body of NATO. Where have we got the idea that we should do NATO’s homework and conduct NATO negotiations via this Chamber?
That, incidentally, is a contradictory policy and it shows the discrepancies in this House; on the one hand, a World Trade Organisation agreement is concluded with Russia and, on the other, an attempt is made to position NATO in Russia’s backyard. That is not Parliament’s role. I say that as a national of a neutral country. This Parliament should not allow itself to be used as an agency of NATO."@en1
