"Mr President, I, too, warmly welcome the initiative to increase the competitiveness of financial services products and services and to create a truly free securities market in line with the EU’s most fundamental objectives. After some of the excesses seen in recent years of over-leveraging, particularly in the banking sector, we now want to see a well-regulated single financial rule book that operates throughout the European Union. This can allow the City of London, which is within my constituency and which I proudly represent, to market its services across the EU and create a levelling of the playing field for all businesses needing to raise capital and for investors to invest in it. But in order to safeguard this free market and public confidence, we must ensure that protection for investors and the transparency of securities are maintained at the highest level.
There currently remain fears about inducements to financial advisers and the potential for insider dealing and market abuse. Let us now work to improve this legislation and deliver a free and fair transparent market for all financial services throughout the entire territory of the European Union."@en1
