"Mr President, I welcome the award of the Sakharov Prize. It is great that opinion was unanimous that it should be awarded to these two brave Iranian dissidents.
However, as you know, I have profound concerns about another aspect of this House, relating to the situation in Iran. At the same time as giving this prize, a delegation of MEPs is leaving tomorrow to actually hold talks with the same Iranian regime that we are condemning. I have to say, and we have just discussed this, that this is a disgraceful decision.
The delegation is not cross-party; it is primarily composed of those from the left of the House. I do not doubt their commitment to human rights, but their visit will be abused by the Iranian authorities and the propaganda value will be immense.
I welcome the award of this prize, but I think we are in danger of sending mixed signals two weeks after our foreign ministers decided to impose further and greater sanctions on Iran. This is a profound mistake by this House. I hope the Members concerned will think again before they go and sip champagne with the Iranian regime."@en1
